Mass, weight, and the units we use
Strictly speaking, a kilogram measures mass while weight is the pull of gravity on that mass. In daily life the two get used interchangeably, and on Earth the numbers line up closely enough that a kitchen scale reading in grams is treating mass and weight as one.
The metric side scales cleanly by powers of ten, so grams, kilograms, and tons relate by simple shifts of the decimal point. The pound and ounce come from a separate tradition, which is why moving between the systems needs the fixed factor of 28.3495 grams to the ounce that this tool holds exact.
