How to use the tip calculator

Start with the bill, choose how much to tip, and say how many people are paying. The tip, total, and each share update right away.

  1. Type the bill amount.
  2. Tap a quick button for 15, 18, 20, or 25%, or type your own rate in the custom field.
  3. Set how many people are splitting it. Leave it at one if you are paying alone.
  4. Read the total at the top, with the tip and per-person share below.

How much should you tip?

In the United States, 15 to 20% of the bill is the usual range for table service at a restaurant. Many diners treat 18% as the everyday default and move up to 20% or more when the service stands out. Below 15% generally signals that something went wrong.

Customs differ from country to country. In much of Europe a service charge is often built into the bill, so a small round-up is plenty. In a few places tipping is not expected at all. When you travel, a quick check of local habits saves both confusion and over-paying.

How to split the bill

Set the number of people and the calculator divides the full total, tip included, into equal shares. This is the fastest way to handle a group dinner where everyone chips in the same amount.

An even split works best when orders are roughly similar. If one person had a steak and another had a salad, you may prefer to tip on the whole bill here, then divide the food itself by what each person ordered. The tip stays fair either way, since it scales with the total rather than with any single dish.

Tipping etiquette by service

Different services carry different norms. These are common US guidelines, not rules:

  • Sit-down restaurant: 15 to 20% of the bill.
  • Bartender: about $1 to $2 a drink, or 15 to 20% of a tab.
  • Food delivery: roughly 10 to 15%, often with a small minimum.
  • Coffee or takeout counter: optional, a small round-up is kind.
  • Hairdresser or barber: 15 to 20% of the service price.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard tip percentage?
For restaurant table service in the US, 15 to 20% is standard. Many people use 18% as a default and go to 20% or higher for great service. The quick buttons cover the common rates.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach, since the tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Either is accepted, so enter whichever amount you prefer.
How do I split a tip between people?
Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the full total, tip included, into equal shares. The per-person amount appears whenever the party is larger than one.
Do I tip on takeout?
Tipping on takeout is optional. A small round-up or a few dollars is a kind gesture, especially for a large or carefully packed order, but it is not expected the way table service is.
Is the tip calculated before or after tax in this tool?
The calculator applies your tip percentage to the bill amount you type. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure as the bill. If you prefer the post-tax total, enter that instead.
How much should I tip for delivery?
A common range is 10 to 15% of the order, with many people setting a few dollars as a minimum on small orders. Weather and distance often push generous tippers toward the higher end.
