What an aspect ratio means
An aspect ratio is the width compared to the height, written as two numbers with a colon. A 16:9 frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. The actual size does not matter: 1920 by 1080 and 1280 by 720 both reduce to 16:9, because they share the same shape.
The ratio is found by dividing both sides by their greatest common divisor. That is the same idea behind simplifying a fraction, so the result is the smallest pair of whole numbers that keeps the shape. Common aspect ratios
A few ratios cover most screens and images you will meet:
- 16:9 is the standard for modern TVs, monitors, and most online video, including 1920 by 1080 and 3840 by 2160.
- 4:3 is the older television and slide shape, still used for some photos and presentations.
- 1:1 is a square, common for profile pictures and some social posts.

Resizing without distortion
Resizing keeps an image sharp only when both sides scale by the same factor. Change the width to 1280 from 1920 and the height has to drop to 720 to stay at 16:9. Pick a height that does not match and the picture stretches or squashes.
