Aspect Ratio Calculator

Reduce a width and height to a clean ratio like 16:9, then resize while keeping the same shape.

Enter a width and a height to see the aspect ratio.

Resize and keep the ratio
Enter a width, a height, and one new dimension to keep the ratio.

How to use the aspect ratio calculator

Enter a width and a height. The tool reduces them to a clean ratio like 16:9 and shows the same shape as a decimal. Both numbers must be above zero, so a blank or zero field stays in the empty state.

To resize, use the second box. Pick whether you know the new width or the new height, type that value, and the calculator solves the side you left out so the shape stays the same. It works with whole pixels or decimal values like 2.39 for a cinema frame.

What an aspect ratio means

An aspect ratio is the width compared to the height, written as two numbers with a colon. A 16:9 frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. The actual size does not matter: 1920 by 1080 and 1280 by 720 both reduce to 16:9, because they share the same shape.

The ratio is found by dividing both sides by their greatest common divisor. That is the same idea behind simplifying a fraction, so the result is the smallest pair of whole numbers that keeps the shape. If you want to convert the pixel dimensions themselves, the length converter handles physical units instead.

Common aspect ratios

A few ratios cover most screens and images you will meet:

  • 16:9 is the standard for modern TVs, monitors, and most online video, including 1920 by 1080 and 3840 by 2160.
  • 4:3 is the older television and slide shape, still used for some photos and presentations.
  • 1:1 is a square, common for profile pictures and some social posts.
  • 21:9 is the ultrawide monitor and cinema shape, and 2.39:1 is a wider cinema scope frame.

Working out a part of a whole, like how much of a frame a crop keeps, is a job for the percentage calculator.

Resizing without distortion

Resizing keeps an image sharp only when both sides scale by the same factor. Change the width to 1280 from 1920 and the height has to drop to 720 to stay at 16:9. Pick a height that does not match and the picture stretches or squashes.

The resize box does this math for you. Give it the new width and it returns the matching height, or the other way round, so the new size holds the original ratio. If you need to convert a real-world speed or distance instead of pixels, the speed converter and length converter cover those units.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an aspect ratio?
Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. For 1920 by 1080 the divisor is 120, which gives 16:9. The calculator does this reduction for you and also shows the ratio as a decimal.
What aspect ratio is 1920 x 1080?
It is 16:9, the standard widescreen shape. So are 1280 by 720 and 3840 by 2160, because they all reduce to the same ratio. Only the pixel count changes, not the shape.
How do I resize an image without stretching it?
Scale both sides by the same factor. Enter your original width and height, then type one new dimension, and the calculator returns the matching side so the ratio stays the same.
Can I use decimal dimensions?
Yes. The tool accepts values like 2.39 or 1.85 for cinema frames and reduces them to whole numbers where it can. Both the width and the height must be above zero.
What does the decimal ratio mean?
It is the width divided by the height. A 16:9 frame is about 1.78 to 1, meaning the width is 1.78 times the height. It is a quick way to compare two shapes at a glance.
